History proves that Kasaragod is a LDF stronghold. But Manjeswaram and Kasaragod have favored UDF in many occasions .The northern areas of the constituency which share the border with Karnataka is considered as the strongest area of the BJP in Kerala. With their communal card politics has given them colorful results in neighboring Karnataka BJP is all set to make huge difference in the polls.

LDF is once again fielding their sitting MP P.Karunakaran,Bharatiya Janatha Yuva Morcha leader K.Surendran is expected to give a tough fight for his as  UDF is still undecided on their candidate. Shanimol Usman was nominated for this seat which she rejected. Being the only lady candidate in the list she expected a candidature in Alapuzha or Attingal but command of the High command was to field her from the northern front the state. Now Shahida Kamal ( National Secretary of Mahila Congress) from Kollam is expected to step into the shoes of Shanimol Usman. This move of fielding a very weak candidate in the strong hold of the left has raised the eye brows of many political experts in Kerala.

Mr. A. P. ABDULLAKUTTY
(CPIM) elected with a margin of 83849 votes

This time around AbdullahKutty has changed sides and he is one of the prominent campaigners for the UDF. Congress has fielded the strongest candidate they have to win back the coveted Kannur Loksabha seat which is considered as a communist bastion. K Sudhakaran who is a seasoned politician is considered as the most popular local congressman of Kannur. This 60-year-old former minister who is a sitting MLA is all set to give CPIM a run for their money.

But CPIM did not go on back foot  instead they have come up with the best possible replacement for Abdulla Kutty. 38-year-old K.K. Ragesh, a fiery SFI National Secretary who was the famous face of many students’ agitations in the state and the country including the one against the admission irregularities in the self financed Engineering & Medical colleges. Ragesh is presently a member of the state committee of the CPIM.

Kannur constituency being the home district of CPI-M state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan a failure to retain the seat will be considered as a huge defeat. So the CPIM cadres are working like well oiled engine overtime to make sure that they overcome the  3 major blockades.

1.    The Strongest Congress Candidate of Congress ever.

2.    The Abdullakutty Factor

3.    Less Popularity of K K Ragesh in the local political arena of Kannur.

But the delimitation of the constituency has increased the strength of CPIM as their strong hold “Thaliparambu” is added and the congres strong hold “North Wayyanad “ has joined to Wayyanad constituency.

The cadres of CPIM is not worried about the  Abdullah Kutty factor as they consider him to be an  insignificant force simply because he does not have any real followers in and out of the party. He rocketed to Delhi too early to create any followers in his home constituency.

Now the Left front is trying their level best to overcome the popularity of K Sudhakaran over this young opponent K K Ragesh. In this unpredictable battle no one is ready to confidently claim victory. Kannur will be one seat where no will dare to predict a winner till 16thof May 2009.
