eci-top-header1

Kerala recorded an impressive voter turn-out of 73.33 per cent in the Lok Sabhaelections, WITH 2.18 crore people have moved to the polling booths to exercise their democratic right across the state. This new polling rate has surpassed the 71.45 per cent clocked last time in the parliament polls of 2004. The highest vote percentage was recorded in the red bastion Kannur where UDF is expecting a full U-turn in the public mandate. When Kannur topped with 80.92 % another Red fort in Malabar, Vadakara was just behind with a whopping 80.45 % The candidature of Sashi Taroor had put Thiruvanathapuram under the focus of even the national media but it failed to impress the ordinary voters as this constituency recorded the lowest polling which was just 65.73 % . But considering the national average, this is still a reasonably good one. 11 out of 20 constituencies recorded poll percentage with was above 70%. The average poll percentage of Kerala was always above 70% from 1984. It has never gone below 60% in the history of 58 years of elections. The highest polling was recorded in the year 1989 Lok Sabha polls with a record 79.30%

ERANAKULAM PARLIAMENT CONSTITUENCY

eranakulam4

ERNAKULAM Parliament Constituency consists of Kalamasserry, Paravur, Vypen, Kochi, Tripunithara, Ernakulam &Thrikkakara assembly segments

This is the constituency where a teacher is fighting an election battle against a student leader. The battle becomes more interesting as this is the first time in the history of  Eranakulam that a lady is fighting to represent the commercial capital of kerala in the parliament. At the beginning of the election process when the  seat mongering was in full swing in the congress camps,  K V Tthomas was considered as a definite outsider. NSU president Hiby Eden had the blessings of  all the major leaders of Kerala. Hibi being the son of Late George Eden , a two time MP from Eranakulam was expected to walk away with the seat. But a so called casual visit of K V Thomas to 10 Janpath, Delhi changed all the equations  upside down. Against the wish and will of State leadership the High command decided to field K V Thomas as the candidate.

The early hopes of Hiby Eden was burnt to ashes, which forced  his colleagues and young congress voters of the state take the matter to the streets all across the state  and many effigies of K V Thomas was also burnt to ashes.

K V Thomas was smart enough to bend his knees and he was quick to promote Hiby Eden at the drop a hat even in street corners. He thought that this would enable him an  easy walk to the banks of victory.

Time is precious and the smart little lady Sindhu Joy who is just 32  capitalized on the time factor. The  patch up time consumed  by her rival camp went in favour of her. K V Thomas started feeling the heat of a disciplined person to person carpet coverage undertaken by the fiery student’s leader and her enthusiastic colleagues. When their exuberance was mixed with the well oiled party machinery of CPIM in Eranakulam the faded hopes of LDF  started to take fresh life and flying colors.

Here LDF is banking on the cosmo/ metro and modern women votes of this  commercial capital . The repeated media propaganda to humiliate the lady candidate has started back lashing the rival candidate. Sindhu Joy has succeeded in attaining a victimized, modern thinking woman who speaks openly and fearlessly. Slowly but surely she has started finding a place in the hearts of her voters.

The Battle will be on till 16th of may 2009, until the result is officially announced.
